Coming at you with one of my favourite recipes to make for my daughters. These soft-baked chocolate chip cookies are made with whole wheat flour instead of white flour and are also dairy free (no butter)!
Chocolate chip cookies made with flaxseed, wheat bran, or whole wheat flour are a healthier alternative to classic cookies. Also replacing butter with coconut oil adds for the same moist taste but with a dairy free option. These cookies are a simple recipe using whole wheat flour and coconut oil.
What I love about recipe testing is taking unhealthy ingredients and choosing better options to find out that it doesn't actually taste that much different! My daughters rarely notice any difference and I feel like I have won haha Giving healthy treats to your family is the best feeling in the world! At least for me 🙂

How To Make Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Set aside for now.
Mix together the brown sugar, coconut oil, vanilla, and egg in a medium-size bowl. I used a hand mixer to make it extra creamy and smooth. You can use a stand mixer on low speed or just give it a go on your own! Mixing them properly really helps the overall flavor!
Add in the whole wheat flour, baking soda, and salt. Fold in slowly then combine and stir well. Once the batter is completed, add in the chocolate chips! Scrape down sides of the bowl to make sure everything is perfectly mixed.
Scoop cookie dough, with a spoon or cookie scooper, onto the prepared baking sheet from earlier. Do not flatten the balls of cookie dough, leave them in the up right way the scooper left them on the baking sheet. This allows them to be the perfect cookie shape once baked.
Bake in the oven for about 9 minutes or until golden on the top. Some ovens require longer baking time so just watch the top of the cookies. If you over cook them they will turn out too hard so do not go too much longer than the 9 minute mark.
Once done, pull from the oven and allow them to cool for at least 5 minutes before removing them from the sheet pan to racks. Then enjoy!

What I love about these cookies is that it has straight forward ingredients that are usually already in my pantry! I love being able to have everything on hand when I am ready to make these cookies.
- ½ cup dark brown sugar packed
- ½ tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- ½ cup melted coconut oil
- 1 ¼ cups whole wheat flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon fine salt
- a pinch of cinnamon
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips

Whole Wheat Flour vs White Flour
So do people opt for whole wheat flour when white flour usually tastes better? I'll tell you exactly why! White flour goes through a process where it loses its natural nutrients. Do to this, it is usually enriched with added nutrients after completing the processing.
The fibre content is one of the main differences between whole wheat and white flour. White flour loses most of its fibre content during the processing period where as whole wheat flour has the level of fibre found naturally in wheat.
So what is so great about fibre anyways? Eating fibre is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer. Eating a diet rich in fibre can help digestion and prevent overall constipation.
Whole wheat flour has high levels of vitamins B1, B3, and B5, riboflavin and folate. It also has more iron, calcium, protein, and other nutrients when compared to white flour. Have I sold you on whole wheat flour yet!?
You can usually easily substitute whole wheat flour in place of white flour in more recipes. I don't even think about it and always grab the whole wheat flour.. not even sure why we have white flour in our house!
If you are gluten tolerant, obviously you cant use whole wheat flour but you can replace it with oat flour or rice flour to get the same healthy benefits! All these alternatives are bursting with fiber!
Cookie Recipe Tips
I have a few tips to make this recipe great. The first tip is making sure you mix the wet and dry ingredients separately before mixing them together. This gives you a chance to make sure everything is evenly distributing before combining different consistencies together.
My next tip for this recipe is to not over fill the sheet pan. If you add too many scoops of cookie dough it will crowd the cookies and they will actually bake differently. This is the same with not adding two sheet pans to the oven at a time, bake only one batch in the oven to ensure the cookies bake perfectly. Even the best ovens have hotspots so we want to make sure we are evenly distributing the heat as possible.
Invest in nonstick silicone mats for your baking sheets! You can get them for super cheap and they really work wonders for your baking. You also save SO much money not having to buy rolls and rolls of parchment paper!
Honestly, the best way to master a cookie recipe is to repeat it. So continue making these cookies over and over again tweaking little things until they suit your whole wheat chocolate chip cookie needs! haha
Can you taste the whole wheat flour in the cookies? No! all-purpose flour isn't one of those ingredients you can taste, therefore switching it to whole wheat flour wont change the taste of the cookies but may change the texture slightly.
How Does Whole Wheat Flour Effect Texture? The texture wont be as soft or smooth has white flour. That is the best way I can put it. You may not even noticed the difference to be honest! It will just be a little more of a rustic vibe cookie haha You will not have bits of grain in these chocolate chip cookies don't worry!
