College is a time of transition, you’re leaving behind your childhood but you haven’t quite fully embraced adulthood yet either. It’s a time of great individual growth and sets you up for your life ahead. It is a time when the habits you form will stick with you for decades, if not the rest of your life. That’s why it is so important to start forming healthy habits instead of unhealthy ones.
Healthy Habits You Need to Start in College all start here! So without any more talk, lets jump into the juice of this post shall we?!
Here are Healthy Habits You Need to Start in College:
College is the time in your life when it is important to start taking care of your body. You may not be feeling it yet, but your body isn’t growing anymore and you will need to start proactively taking care of it. The best way to start doing that is to make sure you eat a healthy diet.
Without maintaining a healthy diet any other habits you start will have a disadvantage because you aren’t fueling yourself properly. While you’re getting into the habit of eating well, now is a good time to stop drinking your calories and start drinking more water. Carry a cute water bottle around with you to help you drink more water!
This is also when you should start to develop a fitness routine you love. Experiment a little while you have time and energy, figure out if you love lifting weights, swimming, hiking, or something else entirely. You can even pick up resistance bands for easy, in dorm, workouts!
Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body and college is the perfect time for you to start figuring out what your mind needs. College is in many ways practice for the adult world. It is full of distractions and if you allow it to then it can easily overwhelm you. You might feel like you need to say yes to every offer you get but, get comfortable saying no. It is one of the most powerful things you can do for your mental health. While you’re getting into the habit of saying no make sure to make time for yourself as well. We all need a little time to do the things we want, even if that means just sitting down and binging a show.
While you’re making time for yourself, be sure to include time for reading every day. This isn’t time for you to catch up on class assignments, instead, it is time for you to get lost in a new book. Getting used to giving yourself time to read will give you an extra opportunity to relax and have amazing health benefits too.
Finally, in taking care of your mind and your mental health, get into the habit of practicing gratitude. This is a proven technique that will help you through difficult times and generally help you feel like you’re happier and more productive.
The earlier in life you start saving the more you will have saved up by the time you are ready to retire. That makes college the perfect time to get into that habit. Even if you can only save a little bit by cutting out one trip to Starbucks a week, you’re at least saving something and getting used to doing it. This is also the time to get used to living within your means. Don’t spend more than you have, and don’t use your credit card for anything you can’t afford. Create a budget and stick with it.
Some of the best habits you will form for keeping your life organized come from college and the madness that it is. This is the time for you to start using a planner to keep track of assignments, events, parties, birthdays, and anything else you need to remember.
This is also a good time in your life to start setting goals for yourself. They will help guide you through life and help you get what you want out of it. Start out small with daily goals then work your way up to monthly goals, yearly goals, and even 5-year goals. Seriously consider the question “where do you see yourself in 5 years?”
