You're almost ready to leave for your vacation, and the excitement is building. Then it hits you: all the little jobs around the house that still need doing. It's a bit of a buzzkill.
Laundry is waiting to be folded, your kitchen's a mess, and what do you do with all the fresh food that's sitting in your fridge?
All these extra to-dos might feel like a pain, but it's better to do them before you leave than walk back into a house that smells bad and looks worse after a week of vacation bliss.
The 30-Minute Home Reset
30 minutes is all you need to make the place feel decent before hopping on a plane or departing on a short Tampa cruise.
You're not doing deep-cleaning. Just enough so you won't immediately feel stressed when you step back through your front door. You can even set a 10-minute timer for every room to stay on track.
Quick Tidy Zones
Start with the spaces you'll notice first when you arrive home, because a few small wins in these areas can have the biggest impact.
- Entryway. Put shoes back where they belong, clear the random items that always collect by the door, and take out any trash or recycling items on your way out.
- Living room. Fold blankets back on the couch, clear coffee tables and side tables, and do a quick dust of any obvious surfaces. It doesn't have to be perfect, just tidy.
- Kitchen counters. Get rid of those dirty dishes hiding in your sink and wipe down the counters before you head out the door.
- Bathrooms. Empty bins, give the sinks a quick rinse if they need them, and most importantly, hang up some fresh towels.
Laundry and Floors
Just starting one more wash before you leave can make a difference. You can hang it to dry, toss it in the dryer, or leave it neatly in a basket for when you return. Just don't leave it in the machine all week.
Then there are the floors. They don't need a deep clean, but a quick sweep or vacuum will get rid of the most obvious dirt and crumbs.
Fridge and Pantry Game Plan
Once all of your packing is done and you've completed your 30-minute clean, it's time to deal with the food situation.
The Fridge Clear-Out
Do a quick scan of anything with an expiry date and decide whether the item will still be edible by the end of your vacation. And if anything already looks or smells questionable, get rid of it now.
You can also use this time to wipe up any obvious spills or sticky shelves so that your fridge is left as clean as possible. A bonus tip: if you leave an open box of baking soda in the fridge, it will absorb any odors that might crop up while you're away.
Smart Food Use
Before you leave, plan one or two meals that incorporate items that are already open. That half block of cheese, the handful of spinach, and the open tub of cream can all be used to make something delicious.
In fact, why not make yourself a few meals you can freeze for when you get home so you don't have to worry about dinner?
While you have the freezer open, toss in bread, fresh herbs, bananas that are getting brown, and milk if there's more than you'll use. They'll all be fine when you're back.
Pantry Check
Even though the items in your pantry aren't as perishable as those in your fridge, it's still a good idea to seal open packets and store any fruit you won't eat before the trip.
Returning Home Made Easy
You don't need to do a complete home overhaul before you leave for your vacation, but setting just 30 minutes to an hour aside can make your return a lot less stressful. There's nothing better than coming home to a clean space, fresh towels, and food in the freezer.
