To jazz up a space and elevate the look of your property, it pays to look up and find ways to make ceilings more impressive. Here are some ways to go about doing that.
Ceiling Design Decor Ideas
Choose Elegant Light Fixtures
One of the most practical ways to make people want to look up when in your home is by choosing elegant light fixtures. You already require lighting in a room, so why not make it a feature by choosing products that tie the space together and look charming, too?
You’ll want to carefully consider where to place light fixtures in each room and every zone's illumination needs. Measure up the space available so you pick out lights that suit nicely and don’t overpower the ceiling, go too low, or look too small.
Add Ceiling Fans
Another option is to add some ceiling fans around your home to not only build in more visual interest on the high parts of each space but also provide you with a way to make areas cooler. As you search for options, you'll find that there is something to suit every taste, color palette, budget, and room size these days.
Again, measure up zones before you shop for fans, and consider ceiling height, not just width and length. You may need to buy a hugger ceiling fan if you have low roofs to cater to, or you may need more than one ceiling fan in large spaces. Decide if you want goods with built-in lights and remotes, the ability to set timers, and other features.
Make Interesting Choices Regarding Colors and Finishes
You can also make some interesting choices regarding ceiling colors and finishes to amplify this part of each room. For instance, you might want to make the area seem larger by painting the ceiling the same color or in the same tone but lighter or darker than what you use on the walls. Or, for heightened drama, you could use a contrasting shade or create some stripes using two different colors.
If you have wallpaper on the walls of a room, you could take one or more colors from that and use it on the ceiling or tie in this hue to something in the carpet, rug, artwork, cushions, or sofa(s) in the room instead. The paint finishes you choose, such as glossy options, can also make a ceiling more visible and help it stand out. Note, though, that in a room with a low ceiling, it’s best to use semi-gloss paint so that the height appears higher.
You could also add texture and impact by hand-painting silver gilt or leaf onto the ceiling, getting a mural put onto it by a clever artist, or adding wallpaper to the roof for a memorable result. Other options include ceiling tiles, tin (perfect for creating an art-deco vibe), or even wooden planks on the ceiling. Some people choose to sheath a ceiling in linen or other fabric, too. You can choose between all sorts of options to make these high areas draw the eye up.
Utilize Architectural Elements
Of course, you can’t go past the use of architectural elements to add more wow factor. For instance, you might create a coffered ceiling (one with a recessed panel) or a drop ceiling (for very high places) or add floating screens, upholstered acoustic panels, medallions, ceiling beams, or faux finishes. Cottage or farmhouse-style homes can look good with tongue and groove beadboard placed on ceilings to add a more rustic feel, or you can install moldings on the roof to make your home appear older.
A skylight can be the perfect solution for smaller rooms or those that don’t have much natural light via windows already. This feature will create a much brighter space and make the ceiling more interesting at the same time.
As you can see, it’s simpler and easier to find versatile ways to “dress up” a ceiling than you might think. If you want to refresh your home in 2023, turning your attention skyward might be just the way to get the impact you’re after.
