Cinnamon Dried Apple Rings
Ingredients
- 5 pounds apples
- lemon juice
- ground cinnamon
How to Make This Dried Apples Recipe
First you are going to wash, core and peel the apples. Using a sharp knife, a mandoline slicer or an old-fashioned apple slicer! Slice the apples as thinly as you can. You want to aim for about ¼ inch thick.
If you want to keep the apples from browning, then toss your apples in the lemon juice in a large bowl ensuring the are fully covered. Let them sit for 30 minutes and then pat the apple rings with a cloth, towel or napkin.
Using a Dehydrator
- Spread the apples in a single layer on the food dehydrator trays. Sprinkle them with the cinnamon. Dehydrate the apples at 135 degrees for 6 to 8 hours. No need to flip them. Do not open the dehydrator door!
Using an Oven
- Preheat the oven to 150 degrees (or the lowest temperature setting possible)
- Spread the apple slices in a single layer on wire baking or cooling rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon then place the racks in the oven.
- Close the oven door but prop it open slightly to allow for air circulation.
- Bake for 5 to 8 hours. This is a broad time because it is all dependent on the apple thickness, your specific oven and the type of apple you are using.
Remove the apples from the dehydrator or oven and check to see if they are completely dry on both sides AND the insides. The apple rings should feel almost like leather. If not keep drying them until you achieve this texture and consistency.
Let cool for a few hours, then store in an airtight container or mason jars in a cool dark place for up to 6 months!
Tips for Making Dried Apples
Drying your own apples is an easy way to preserve them for use throughout the year but the process can seem a little intimidating to some people.. at least it was for me when I first tried to make these!
- Before you get started, make sure your apples are fresh and firm. If they're soft or bruised, it's best to throw them out and start over with new ones.
- There are so many apple varieties out there. You want to choose the best apples that are not too sweet, or they will taste too much like chewy candy. You can also use tart apples such as Granny Smith or Northern Spy, or naturally sweet, like Gala or Fuji.
- Wash the apples thoroughly, then core them and slice them into ¼-inch rings
- When thinking storage, be sure not to store them too close together because this could cause molding problems later on down the road!
What is a Dehydrator
A dehydrator is a machine that removes moisture from food. It's used to preserve food by removing the moisture, which keeps the food from spoiling. They can also be used to create healthy snacks that are more flavorful and nutritious than those made with preservatives or added sugar.
This is done by circulating warm air over a tub of trays that hold the food being dried. The air has a low relative humidity and no bacteria or mold spores can survive in it. The warm air passes over the trays, picking up moisture from the food, which it then releases into a collection area at the bottom of the dehydrator.
The process takes anywhere from 8 to 24 hours depending on how moist or dry you want your finished product to be. It is a great way to free up space in your freezers!
Health Benefits of Dehydrated Apples
Apples are a great addition to anyone's healthy diet. Dehydrated apples are not only tasty, but they are also great for your health because they hold on to a lot of nutrients and are low in calories. Apples have been shown to have a ton of benefits; from the antioxidant properties that fight aging, to the fiber that promotes a healthy digestive system. Dehydrated apples are an excellent snack for anyone looking to enjoy the benefits of this nutritious fruit!
Overall, dehydrated apples are a great snack for anyone looking for a convenient way to get a daily dose of fruit in their diet. From lowering the risk of heart disease to helping you lose weight, they're valuable on a number of fronts. Of course there's more to a dehydrated apple than meets the eye: it retains its nutritional value, and can even aid in your weight loss efforts when eaten regularly. They're also an ideal snack for hungry hikers and campers, which makes them great for outdoor activities as well.
