This is by far my all time favorite homemade all-purpose cleaner recipe. If I was forced to turn in all my homemade products, this is the one that I would beg you to keep by far!
This homemade Citrus all-purpose cleaner is such a simple and pure way to clean your home. It is easy to make and also cheap! It is a great product to lightly clean your home without any harsh chemicals.
This recipe eliminates the need to add essential oils to cover up the smell of vinegar because it has infused citrus peels in it! It just has a perfect clean smell that will become a known scent of your home once you start using it regularly!
PLEASE NOTE. This DIY all-purpose cleaner still uses vinegar so you should not use it on natural stones. It could damage them. Natural stones include granite, marble and soapstone. Unfortunately it can also strip off hardwood floors so be cautious when using this all-purpose cleaner recipe. I used this recipe on mirrors, windows, carpets, toilets, tubs, shower, sinks, appliances, and linoleum tiles.
All-natural cleaning products are the way to go. They're made from ingredients that are safe for both you and your family members. They're also good for the planet—no harsh chemicals means no toxic runoff into our water supply! And they might even save you money because they're more concentrated than store-bought cleaners (and we all know how expensive those things can be!). Need more reasons to use a homemade cleaner?
You don't have to spend a lot of money on cleaning products. You can make your own all-purpose cleaner with simple ingredients. The best part is that it's so easy to make that you'll never need store-bought cleaners again!
Homemade Citrus All-Purpose Cleaner Ingredients:
- 2 cups citrus peels in strips (you can use lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit)
- 3 cups vinegar (apple cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar) or more as needed.
All Purpose Cleaner Directions:
Put the citrus peels in a quart size glass jar and cover with the vinegar. Screw a tight fitting lid on top. If you are using a metal lid (like a mason jar), make sure you put a piece of parchment paper in between the lid and the jar to prevent corrosion.
Set the jar in a sunny spot for two weeks to infuse the citrus into the vinegar. Once done, give it a good shake and then strain (with a mesh strainer) out the peels and pour the liquid in a glass spray bottle. This mixture is the citrus cleaner!

Natural Cleaner Tips
- If you don't have any citrus peels, you can always substitute with 5 to 10 drops of essential oils to a solution of 1 cup distilled vinegar and 1 cup water.
- Green oils such as tea tree and eucalyptus work double duty; they have disinfectant qualities and smell amazing!
- If you're using a microfiber cloth, be sure to wring it out well before wiping. If you're using a damp cloth, wipe gently so as not to spread the spill around.
- Use this cleaner on surfaces on a weekly basis. This will prevent build up of oils and grime that can make them look dingy or discolor them over time.
- If you like the smell of citrus, try adding orange essential oil or lemon essential oils with the peels. You can buy it online or at most health food stores.
- You can also add in some herbs if you want some extra delicious scents going on in your home! Try adding in rosemary or thyme.
- Store your essential oils in a cool, dark place so they don't go rancid.
- For tougher stains like grease or rust on chrome faucets, mix this homemade citrus all-purpose cleaner with salt and rub it in with a sponge until the stain is gone!
- remove any dried dirt with a dust pan before spraying the cleaner. This is make sure you are not spreading around any excessive dirt.
