The secret to maintaining granite and marble countertops is to use the right cleaner. As most manufacturers will tell you, it is important to avoid anything acidic or harsh cleaners like lemon, bleach, vinegar or ammonia. Basically anything with acid ingredients (natural or not) is a no for granite and marble countertops! They will strip the protective sealant of the stone.
Soap and water is usually advised for cleaning your natural stone countertops. Although this works for some people, others agree that the soap leaves an unwanted film on the counters no matter how much water and wiping is done.
Alcohol works the best for cleaning your granite and marble. I know, shocker! It is pH neutral, evaporates quickly and has the added bonus of being a disinfectant! If you prefer a refreshing scent, which I assume you do, you can add lemon or citrus essential oils! Although they are derived from citrus fruits, essential oils are pH neutral and safe for use on natural stones.
