Welcome back to another farmhouse post here on the blog.
You may know already but my husband and I are planning to build our dream farmhouse within the next couple of years. So I am always on the hunt for inspiration and ideas. I want to put my heart and soul into our farmhouse because it will be our forever home.
We plan on staying in this house forever, so it needs to be perfect, it needs to tick all our boxes, it needs to be HOME. No pressure right?
That is why we are in no rush to start. We are taking our time, choosing the most perfect piece of land while collecting house plans, and inspirational photos. We have an on going MUST HAVES list of things we need in our house. Someday I will share that list with you!
I love printing photos or cutting out magazine clippings of things that spark my creativity for our house. I have a nerdy binder with everything I see that I think would work for us.. or that are just too pretty not to save.
That being said..
here are some of our favourite popular farmhouse plans

Right now, this house by House Plans ticks the majority of our must haves off. The only thing is that it is quite big.. coming in at just over 4700 sq feet. Thats a lot of house! We would most likely small scale the house by deleting the living room off the kitchen and removing all the bathrooms (except one common bathroom) on the upper level. The more sq footage, the more cleaning! And of course higher expense.
The other thing about this house I am not a fan of is the look of the exterior.. I would make some major changes here as well. Make it look less European and more farmhouse.
I love this cute house by House Plans! Obessed with the master bedroom and the open main living floor plan.
The one major red flag for me is that there is not really any room for a full size dining table. Family dinners are super important to us so we would have to figure out a way to expand the main living area to fit a full size dining table!
We would also want to delete the screened in porch. I dont think it would be something we would ever really use… especially when its winter time (which is basically half the year in Canada!!). There also isn’t any office space in this plan.. so I feel like we would HAVE to have a basement which we would must rather avoid.. We have just had so many issues with our current basement flooding..
There is so much I love about this Architecture Designs farmhouse!
I love the exterior look of this house. The country farm/ranch feeling just shines! This massive porch just melts my heart.
Somethings I would change about this house plan would be the pantry. I want a window in my pantry for natural light (food bloggers needs!). So I would have to re-confirgue that area of the house to put the pantry near the perimeter of the house. Maybe I can turn the dining room into a place for the pantry, and the rest can be a kids play room so (when we do have kids) they can be close to us while in the kitchen! Then put the dinning room into the study and make one of the bedrooms on the main floor into a study/office and the other one can be the guest bedroom!
I absolutely love the mudroom in this house too! Such a great idea to have a kennel in the mudroom.
Another great plan by Architecture Designs.
This house has so much great space, really utilizes all 3,300 sq feet of living space! I would make one of the bedrooms on the main level a guest bedroom and the other one a kids playroom! I would also eliminate some of the bathrooms on the main level.
I am also not a huge fan of a bump out for a dinner table off the kitchen. I like the kitchen to have lots of windows for optimal natural light. So I would want that deleted and moved to the living room. Might have to expand the living room a little to fit a dinner table in there too. even if it is a little round table.
Another plan by Architecture Designs.
This 3,400 sq foot, 6 bedroom house is bursting with so much living space. I love how this plan includes TWO bonus room options that you can work on after you move into the house.
This would be the perfect house to avoid having to put in a basement. I would totally turn the main bonus room upstairs into a massive family room with a big TV for movie nights!
Here is another plan by Architecture Designs.
This is a smaller house compared to the other ones above. I think you would definitely need a basement in this house, but I do love this one.
Such a dreamy master bedroom and ensuite. The kitchen looks amazing, and the open living space is amazing. I can just picture a perfect wall of windows a long the back and a nice fireplace with built ins for optimal storage space!
Lastly, another great plan by Architecture Designs.
This one is adorable. I love the open main level with the bonus family room above the garage. It’s a bit smaller then some of the previous plans I shared but definitely has potential.
Again, I am not a fan of the bump out kitchen table location. I would rather have a longer living space to fit the table in between the living room and kitchen. The master suite is amazing again. And that pantry with a butler corner is so dreamy! LOVE.
There you have it!
