When you're feeling congested, sometimes all you need is a little extra vapor to clear your head. This is my favorite homemade vapor rub recipe for adults. This beats any store bought vapor rub on the market by far!
It's made from all-natural ingredients, so you know it's safe for you. And when you use our vapor rub, you don't just feel better—you smell better, too! That's because we've infused it with essential oils that smell like fresh-cut pine trees and lavender flowers.
The base of this recipe is coconut oil, which has antibacterial and antiviral properties. It also helps open up your airways and loosen congestion. Add to this some tea tree essential oil, lavender essential oil, and eucalyptus essential oil and you've got yourself a powerful vapor rub!

Natural Vapor Rub Recipe for Adults:
Ingredients
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- ¼ cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons beeswax or 1 tablespoon soy wax
- 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 20 drops peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
Directions
In a small sauce pan, turn on medium heat. Place coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax into the sauce pan and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and add in the essential oils. Mix in with a wooden spatula or spoon until full combined.
Pour mixture into an air tight glass container. Allow to cool for about one hour before covering with lid. Store in a cool dark place.
Tips for Using Natural Vapor Rubs
- To use this vapor rub, apply and massage onto the chest, feet or neck to relieve cough and congestion in adults
- Use only a tiny amount—a little bit goes a long way!
- Do not use this recipe on children. Eucalyptus essential oil should not be used by children under the age of 10. Peppermint essential oils should not be used on children under the age of 6. Use this homemade natural vapor rubs for children recipe instead.
- If you have sensitive skin, test the vapor rub on your arm or behind your ear to make sure it's not too strong for your skin.
