Waking up early and waking up feeling full of life, definitely has it's advantages.. but not all advantages come easy in life. Especially when it comes to being a morning person. Becoming a morning person takes practice, it takes training, it takes dedication. Wow I make it sound like we are getting ready for a marathon here. RUNNNNNNNNNN!
I've made these changes in my life to become a morning person and they have completely transformed my life for the better. I will admit, I do have days where I continue to hit the snooze a few times... by a few times I mean 12 times. But hey! We are all human and can't be perfect all the time. And of course some nights are a little rougher then others.
These tips you are about to read are for 90% of mornings. It is all about routine. So lets jump right into these tips to becoming a morning person!
Go to Bed Earlier
DUH. This is an obvious point, which is why I decided to throw it at the top of this list. Getting it out of the way so we can move on to greater and better things. Am I right?! Anyway, this time is crucial to becoming a morning person. The best way to become a morning person is ensuring you get enough sleep. Everyone needs 6-8 hours of sleep a night to be functional the next day. Knowing this, you should be aiming for 8 hours a night. Go to bed, turn off the lights/t.v 8 hours before your alarm will go off. This way you have no choice but to get enough sleep!
Eat Healthy Foods
Eating healthy is another crucial point. You may be wondering how eating healthy will help you become a morning person, am I right? Im going to tell you right now. Eating healthy gives you natural energy. Energy to help you rise and shine with the early birds. Don't knock this tip down until you try it! Sometimes you need to really take a pledge to healthy living to stick with a healthy diet, but once you get started and see the amazing benefits of eating a healthy and whole diet it will help you continue.. My favourite way to look at it is eating to nourish my body and my mind. Eating healthy not only makes you look and feel better, it also works to increase your endorphins as well as sleep hormones!
Drink More Water
Everyone needs AT LEAST 2 litres of water a day. This is super important. Drinking water will make you feel refreshed in the mornings and also will keep your body hydrated during the night. You will wake up without the headache of feeling dehydrated. My favourite thing to do to ensure I get my water intake is ALWAYS have a bottle of water with me.. and when I say always... I mean always! Where ever I'm going, I always carry my bottle of water with me, even if its just to a different room in my house, I always have it with me. My favourite water bottle is a glass 1 litre bottle I picked up one Christmas. Glass bottles are a lot healthier then plastic bottles but I was always worried that having a glass bottle would be dangerous for the klutz! Then I found this glass bottle that I am now OBSESSED with!
Set Alarms EVERY Morning
This is something Dylan HATES about me.. I set an alarm EVERY MORNING. Even on mornings I know I am allowed to sleep in. On my days off, I will set my alarm to make sure I don't sleep the day away. I will set it for 8 hours after I go to bed. I absolutely love this. You feel so much more accomplished during the morning of your day off, if you just wake up. It takes a lot of self control to not turn off the alarm and go back to bed. Trust me. Push through it! Don't think about it. Just get out of bed.
Eliminate Screens in the Bedroom
Screens in the bedroom are distractions. Distractions from getting to sleep. Eliminate these from the bedroom and you will be able to unwind faster. Make your room tranquil, and full of relaxation. You can even take it to a new level by placing your phone on the far wall of your bedroom so you have to get up to turn off your alarm. This is a double bonus because you have the distracting screen far away and it forces your to get up instead of hitting that snooze button!
Establish a Night Time Routine
Getting into a routine EVERY NIGHT makes it easy to get to bed on time. Your body will get use to this routine and will know that it is time to start getting tired. Train your body and mind to know when to go to sleep. My favourite night routine is a nice cup of peppermint tea. I always have a cup of tea before bed. This has really trained my body to identify the tea as a trigger to get tired. How crazy is that right?! Who knew something as simple as tea can work as a sleep remedy. Your night time routine could include anything! My mom always reads before bed, she sys that it acts as a sleep trigger for her. Whatever you decide to have included in your night time routine, make it stick. It takes a while for a new habit to become a routine.
No Food 3 Hours Before Bed
There is nothing worse then crawling into bed with a food baby in your belly. I find it feels like a rock in my gut if I eat before going to bed. And I also feel super sluggish the next morning. I am not saying go to bed hungry, because that won't help you out either. If you need to eat before going to bed, have something light and easily digestible. I know that if I eat before bed I always have a worse sleep then if I go to sleep on an empty stomach. Try it and if it doesn't work for you then decrease the amount of time after your last meal and sleep. I know some people who need a snack before bed or they wake up in the middle of the night hungry! If this is you, then try and opt for a small lighter snack before bed.
Disable The Snooze on Your Alarm
This could be a bad idea or a really good idea. You could disable your snooze alarm on your phone but just be careful that you don't turn off your alarm and go back to sleep. Disabling your alarm forces your to wake up and get moving. I also find that having my phone plugged in across the room instead of on my nightstand forces me to roll out of bed right away. This may work for you too!
Open Them Curtains
Natural light is key to waking up. Get that vitamin D first thing in the morning. This works wonders. Natural light makes you feel refreshed and alive. Go outside and enjoy your coffee or sit near a big window to read the morning newspaper (or my blog hehe). I always find it harder to wake up early in the winter because its dark out until 7am. If this is you, then maybe consider investing in a UV sun lamp. My grandma uses this in the winter to fight the winter blues and she loves it!
Do Something Exciting Every Morning
Give yourself something to look forward to! If you know you have a delicious breakfast waiting for you, or you planned a fun hike with your best friend, you are more likely to wake up and get moving. Reward yourself for getting out of bed and it will become easier for you everyday! I always reward myself with a nice cup of coffee and at least 30 minutes of me time. I read blogs or watch my favourite Youtube vlogs (p.s follow my youtube channel to follow my day to day life.. SHAMELESS PLUG). Whatever your "me time" is, this will give you motivation to get up and enjoy your morning rather then feel rushed and stressed out.

Such great tips and a few things I had not considered. I've been trying so hard to get BACK to being a morning person so this post is right on time. I gasped at your suggestion to turn off the snooze feature. It's such a great, yet terrifying recommendation, lol. I snooze at least 3-5 times every morning so it's definitely a habit that I need to break.

I couldn't agree with you more! 😀
