Round coffee tables are all the rage, but how can you style one in a way that works for your living room? The answer is to use some simple and creative ideas to make sure that any round table fits seamlessly into your space and doesn't overpower it.
Lets jump into these tips on how to style a round coffee table!
Tips to Style a Round Coffee Table:
Don't be afraid to put a round table into a square room!
While a round coffee table is versatile, it’s not easy to find the perfect fit for your home. To help you get started, we asked interior designer and blogger Jamie Meeks for her tips on how to style a round coffee table—and she had some great suggestions!
Don't be afraid to put your round coffee table in a square room. Yes, this sounds like an oxymoron but there are ways to make it work. The key is finding furniture that looks right when placed around your circular piece.
Keep your décor organic and low to the ground.
Keep your décor organic and low to the ground. If you're going for a natural vibe, try a rustic look with a distressed coffee table and distressed chairs. The idea here is to keep things as organic as possible by using pieces that have been worn over time. Don't go overboard with this—too much of anything can be overwhelming!
Experiment with different combinations of function and form.
When styling a round coffee table, it's all about experimenting with different combinations of function and form. You can mix and match materials, styles of furniture, shapes of furniture, colors or patterns—the possibilities are endless!
For example: A glass top with metal legs is a classic combination that works well in any space. Or if you're looking for something more casual, try using wooden legs on your coffee table for an earthy vibe. Or if you want your space to feel cozy and inviting then opt for softer fabrics such as velvet or suede instead of leather or metal finishes.
Mix and match materials.
Mix and match materials. This is a great trick to use when you have a round coffee table and want to create a unique look. You can mix and match almost any material, as long as it's not too different in size! For example, we used two different types of wood: one with an intricate finish on top of the table and another more rustic piece at the base.
The difference in texture adds character to the space while also contrasting with other elements like the walls or flooring underneath it all—and that makes for an eye-catching focal point!
Don't be afraid to create "vignettes" within the space.
You can also use vignettes to create a focal point in your living room. If you have a large and/or blank wall, it may feel empty. You can solve this problem by creating small groupings of items on the table and hanging them on the wall. This will give your eyes something to focus on as well as break up the monotony of a huge blank space. Here's an example of what I mean:
Another idea is to use your coffee table as a frame for artwork or another piece of furniture that you want to highlight. For example, if there are some beautiful chairs in one corner of the room, put them behind the sofa so they get all the attention while still being accessible from all sides!
Give it some company.
- Give it some company. When styling a round coffee table, don't be afraid to mix and match materials.
- Keep it simple. When setting up your vignettes, keep them clutter-free by using only one item from each category (i.e., one piece of art and one decorative accessory).
- Add a tray. Place an oversize tray down on top of the table for extra organization or display options!
Keep it simple.
Keeping things simple is the key to styling any piece of furniture, and this especially applies to round coffee tables. The best way to avoid clutter is to use your table's natural shape as a guide and stick with circular shapes and patterns. Don't be afraid of adding texture or color as long as you keep it clean!
Another benefit of using circular shapes in your decorating scheme is that they don't require much storage space. If you have a lot of books lying around, try storing them on the floor instead of piling them up on the table itself—that way, it won't take away from the aesthetic impact of your decorating style.
Add a tray.
Add a tray. Trays are great for holding magazines, remote controls, and other small items during parties. They can also be used to display decorative items such as picture frames or vases of flowers. You can find trays at flea markets, thrift stores, and online.
Don't be afraid of clutter.
If you’re like most people, you probably have a small collection of knick knacks that you keep on your coffee table. While this may seem like an odd thing to do with such an otherwise empty space, it’s actually an essential part of making your home feel lived-in and cozy.
Your coffee table is the perfect place to showcase some of your favorite things that make up who you are as a person. If you love art and design, display one or two framed prints or posters along with some sculptures or vases filled with flowers or succulents. If you enjoy entertaining guests at home, display some napkins and drink coasters for that extra touch of class.
And if none of these things suit your tastes, don’t worry—the best way to decorate a round coffee table is by using things from around the house! A stack of books will look great on any surface (just make sure they aren’t too heavy so they don’t cause damage). You could even add a bowl full of candies if that suits your fancy! No matter what kind of style aesthetic appeals most specifically right now in terms quality content creation process.
Take advantage of storage space.
You might not realize that storage space can be a great way to add value to your home. It can help you keep your living room looking clean and organized. It's also an ideal place for storing books, blankets and board games that you want to keep close at hand.
Add fresh flowers or live plants.
Add fresh flowers or live plants. Place a vase with fresh flowers on your coffee table to add color and texture. If you're feeling more ambitious, consider using a plant that can be easily maintained in water (like an ivy). It will add natural beauty without requiring much upkeep—just check the water level daily and add a little if needed!
Make sure you get one that matches your decor and is easy to maintain: Some plants are toxic if ingested; others require special lighting conditions. Be sure to research any potential hazards before choosing a plant for your coffee table!
Adding a round coffee table can help balance the look of your living room.
Round coffee tables are the perfect way to add a casual touch to your living room. The round table can help balance the look of your living room, and it is often used in dining rooms as well. If you want to use a round coffee table in your home, here are some tips on how it can be used:
- If you have an open floor plan that needs a little more balance, try using a round coffee table as an accent piece by placing it at one end of your sofa or chair arrangement. This will draw attention towards the center of your room while also providing a functional surface for drinks and snacks.
- If you have two couches facing each other with plenty of space between them, consider using one long bench instead of two chairs at either end—this works especially well when paired with low-slung sofas because it creates more space in front without sacrificing comfort!
You can style a round coffee table without having to go out and buy new furniture, and you don't have to be an interior designer!
You can style a round coffee table without having to go out and buy new furniture, and you don't have to be an interior designer! You can use a round table in a square room.
When it comes to styling your living space, you may think that the shape of your table is what's important. But consider this: The shape of your room affects how you use your furniture and accessories. If you have a square or rectangular-shaped room, then using a circular coffee table might make sense for you.
However if your living area has high ceilings and large windows with lots of natural light coming through them (and thus creating more of an open floor plan), then using a rectangle may work better for how much space there is between each wall/window vs how far apart from each other they are placed together as well as where everything else sits within that space.

Hi Nikki,
I enjoyed reading your post about coffee tables. I need your professional expertise because I’m second guessing myself concerning a recent purchase. My sofa is 96” long so I bought a 51” round coffee table from Williams Sonoma. Now I’m afraid it’s too big! Just not sure if it appears really large because nothing has been in the space or if I blew it. 🤦🏼♀️I have 30 days to return. Please help!
Nikki
Hi Dottie! 51 inch is great! I would recommend anything under 64 inches for a 96 inch sofa as long as you have to space for it. 🙂
