Are you considering rural living? Looking for pros and cons of moving to the country? I have you covered in this post!
I grew up in the city and moved to the country, which is why I know that moving to the country is a huge decision. You need to consider if you're ready for fresh air, gorgeous views, and a slower pace of life. But you'll also want to think about how far away your nearest grocery store will be, how well-stocked local libraries are, and how many neighbors you'll have within shouting distance.
If you're already feeling stressed at the thought of venturing out into the wilderness (or "countryside," as I hear some people call it), take a deep breath! After reading this post, which lays out all of the ways that country living rocks (fresh food! outdoor space!) and stinks (long drives! no sushi restaurants nearby!), you'll know if moving to or staying in the country is right for your lifestyle. So it is time to look at the pros and cons of moving to the country!
Pros and Cons of Moving to The Country:
Country Living Pros
Pro: Fresh air and a beautiful view.
We are starting off this pros and cons of moving to the country post with an obvious one. The country is a great place to breathe fresh air and get a beautiful view. Fresh air can help you sleep better, feel happier, and exercise more. Breathing in fresh air increases your oxygen intake which promotes relaxation and helps release tension in the body.
It also has a positive effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart health by reducing stress hormones like cortisol that are released when we are under stress (which is often). A lovely view from your farmhouse front porch can also inspire positive emotions that may lead to increased creativity or productivity while relaxing us at home after work or school.
It is proven that those who live in the country tend to have less stress. Stress levels are lower for those living in a country home and rural community! There is also less pollution and cleaner air in the country due to less people and ways of life. Polluted air can definitely be a reason to leave the city and move to the country, especially if you suffer from lung conditions or weakened immune system.
Pro: Great produce at nearby farms.
Most people who move to the country are looking for a way to simplify their lives. For most of us, that means finding ways to eliminate as much stress as possible. One of the best ways to reduce your stress is by eating healthy food.
A lot of people think that eating healthy means going out and buying expensive health foods at the grocery store, but it doesn't have to be like this! You can find amazing organic produce at nearby farms and markets; these places offer some awesome benefits:
- They often provide fresh produce from local farmers who care about the quality of their product
- They're an excellent way for you (and your family) to get out into nature on a regular basis
- They help sustain local businesses and economies
Dont forget you can always grow your own food (vegetables and fruits) with all that backyard space. You will save money on groceries moving to the country! There are so many Pros and Cons of Moving to The Country!
Pro: Space to build a family farm.
One of the great things about moving to the country is the potential for a family farm.
This can be a very relaxing and peaceful place to raise kids. It's good for the soul and helps them grow up in a healthy environment. There are plenty of activities available, including gardening, animals and more.
Additionally, living in small town America means there will be less crime than living in large cities where violence is more prevalent than it should be (especially if you're a single parent). You'll also likely have better access to healthcare services because doctors tend not to want people driving an hour or more each way just for their appointments!

Pro: Better composting opportunities.
As you know, composting is a great way to recycle organic materials and turn them into something that can be used in your garden. But it's also good for the environment. As you create your own compost pile, you're keeping waste out of landfills and limiting how much waste goes into our local waterways.
You're also helping build up the soil by providing nutrients that plants need over time. If you have any extra food from restaurants or grocery stores (such as containers with small amounts of leftovers), consider using them for your compost pile instead!
Pro: Crime rates tend to be lower.
The statistics make a compelling argument for country living. According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, which gathers data on crime from over 18,000 law enforcement agencies across the U.S., there were a total of 1,279 murders nationwide in 2014—that's 26 per 100,000 people.
The murder rate in rural counties was even lower at just 15 murders per 100,000 residents that year; meanwhile, urban areas had 39 violent crimes per 100,000 residents! This doesn't necessarily mean that you'll never see any crime if you live outside of town—but it does suggest that rural areas may be safer than cities or suburbs when it comes to violent crime and other harmful activities like drug trafficking and prostitution.
Pro: Lower Cost of Living.
There are many reasons why moving to the country can be a good choice for some people. One reason is the lower cost of living. When you move to the country, you do not have to worry about paying high taxes. You will also save money on your utilities and other expenses related to city living.
You can save money on things like groceries too by choosing to live outside of town. Housing is also usually more affordable. A new home can cost the same as a small city apartment! You can save on property taxes, rent and other living expenses.
Disadvantages of Moving to the Country
Con: Healthcare access might be limited.
- Rural areas have fewer doctors and hospitals. In general, rural areas have lower population densities than urban ones, which means that there are simply fewer medical professionals around to see you or take care of your injuries. That said, not all rural areas are created equal when it comes to healthcare access; some may have more doctors per capita than their city counterparts. Still, if the ultimate goal is to be near a hospital or emergency room in case of an emergency (and who doesn’t want that?), then it may be best not to move out into the country until your next job opportunity comes along!
- Rural areas have fewer specialists. As with doctors and hospitals, the lack of specialists means less options when treating serious conditions—such as cancer, rare diseases, mental health disorders—that require specialized care beyond what is available locally. This can make getting treatment significantly more difficult and time-consuming for those who need it most; but on top of that wait time issue is also an added financial burden since specialists tend to charge higher fees than primary care physicians due primarily because they often work at private clinics rather than public ones like VA facilities do so they can charge whatever prices they want without having any repercussions from anyone else besides maybe their patients themselves...but even then only if those patients know about how expensive everything really was before agreeing upon payment plans upfront beforehand though likely won't even realize until after months later once they receive actual invoices while trying desperately try find ways afford them now too late already paid already owed now everything gone wrong already ruined forever lost forever
Con: Fewer Job Opportunities
Moving to the country is a great way to de-stress, but it's also a huge change from the hustle of city life. In fact, there are fewer job opportunities when you move to the country.
There are fewer jobs in the country overall, but that doesn't mean you won't find something that suits your needs. You will need to consider what jobs are available and if you have the skills and training for them.
Con: Longer drive to work.
The disadvantage of moving to the country is that you’ll likely have to drive further to work. For some, this may be an easy adjustment; for others, it could be a deal-breaker. The commute might take longer due to traffic and road conditions (think potholes or animal crossings) or simply because it’s farther away and there aren’t as many options for public transportation. In addition, while driving in the city can be stressful at times, driving in rural areas can be more dangerous since there are fewer cars on the road.
Finally, if you commute every day and your commute takes you out of town—and then back into town—it could cost more than your current commute does now (gasoline costs money). You could also end up spending more time on your daily drive than with friends and family members who live closer by because they still live within city limits but work farther away from them than they used to do when they lived in urban areas
Con: No big city excitement.
While some of the other cons listed here are the result of living in a rural area, this one is an inherent part of country living. Less entertainment in the country for sure, with fewer people and a quieter way of living. There are many exciting things to do in cities that you won't find in rural areas:
- Nightlife
- Concerts
- Tourist attractions
- Cultural events and theater performances
- Museums and art galleries
You will need to find outdoor activities which usually are more independent and in return can leave you lonely and even suffer from homesickness. Even though you may be less entertained, you will always have your beautiful farmhouse kitchen you can take up hobbies in!
Con: Longer wait times for deliveries and services.
While it's true that some of the conveniences of city life are lost when you move to the country, there are good reasons to give up those luxuries in exchange for a more peaceful existence. Most importantly, living in town can feel like living on top of each other. If left unchecked, this can lead to stress and conflict between neighbors. In contrast, many people who make the move to rural areas find themselves more connected with their neighbors than they ever were in a city setting. This is because it's hard for people not knowing each other very well (such as those who live on different floors or different streets) to get together on short notice and enjoy one another's company face-to-face—but if you're out walking your dog by yourself through fields of wildflowers every morning or harvesting peaches from your own tree at dusk after work every day then it isn't difficult at all!
There are lots of reasons that moving to the country is great, but it's not for everyone!
There are lots of pros to living in the country. For one thing, you'll have a lot more space and privacy. And if you're into having a vegetable garden or raising chickens, it's much easier to do that on your own property. Plus, all of the artsy stuff that people love about country life—like acre landscapes and old buildings—is right there!
But there are also some downsides to moving to the country: it can be harder to get around than in a city with public transportation and taxis (although if you live near New York City or Los Angeles then maybe this doesn't apply). Your neighbors may not be as accessible as they would be in an apartment building where everyone lives on every floor (as opposed to spread out over several miles). And depending on where your new home is located geographically speaking, getting used to colder weather might take some time before it feels normal again (if ever).
You’re right—it’s not for everyone. There are certain things about living in the city that you just can’t get in the country, especially if you’re used to them. But remember—moving to the country is also a great way to simplify your life!
All of those things that you might have to wait for come with their own set of responsibilities and decisions, and by taking yourself out of that world, you can spend time focusing on what really matters: your family, your health, and your mood & happiness. Again, it all boils down to personal preference!
If you decide that the country isn't for you, there's no shame in sticking with the city lifestyle that works best for who you are! I hope you enjoyed this post all about Pros and Cons of Moving to The Country!
